Shrimp Ras:
A Solace to Shrimp Farming

A Sustainable Transformation

The shrimp sector is now the world’s fastest-growing protein source. Shrimp is one of the most traded seafood globally and its farming is a success story of scientific aquaculture. Shrimp farming generates millions of employment, and provides foreign exchange to developing countries. About 10 million MT of shrimp are caught or reared each year, of which about 70% come from shrimp farming. Shrimp represents roughly 5% of global aquaculture production. Farm production of shrimps exploded over the past several decades which transitioned the household shrimp consumption. Shrimp aquaculture is concentrated in Asia and Central America and it has long been an environmental concern, as mangroves were often converted, approximately 2,50,000 ha, for farming ponds and pond effluents caused significant damage to surrounding ecosystems. Average emissions are likely about 13.5 kgCO2e/kg edible weight (EW). Further unassured crops due to viral disease outbreaks together with biosecurity, food safety and traceability issues have limited financing available for farmers.

In this context our EC4RAS – Electro-Coagulation based exclusively designed Shrimp RAS would be the solace to shrimp farming sector which could transform the sector into the most sustainable one with low land, water, environmental and carbon footprint together with solving biosecurity, food safety, traceability issues prevailing in pond operations. OUR TECHNOLOGY

EC4RAS has developed electro-coagulation based water treatment technology for Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS). Electro-coagulation water treatment is a promising treatment method due to its high effectiveness, its lower maintenance cost, less need for labor, rapid achievement of results, short operation time, negligible amount of chemicals and less sludge production. Our EC4RAS Electro-Coagulation water treatment system continuously treats aqueous streams coming out from culture tanks. Contaminants present in the aqueous streams are removed by the REDOX reactions in the electro-coagulation reactor.  Our technology is capable of continuously maintaining the prescribed water quality such as temperature, oxygen, pH, TAN, ammonia N, solids etc., with a single Electro-coagulation reactor and thereby eliminating various components of the biological RAS loop.  Our systems are highly efficient in controlling metabolites, infecting agents and organic compounds responsible for off flavors which implies that the animal welfare is also taken care of well.   Our technology is a perfect combination for cultivation of the marine, brackish water and low saline water aquatic species in RAS. EC4RAS is a zero discharge RAS and it accounts for more than 30% increase in the production capacity with lower foot prints of land, water, environmental and carbon.
